Terms of Address
What should a student call a professor?
- Professor Surname: any college teacher who holds the rank Professor in her title
- Doctor Surname: any college teacher who holds a doctorate
- Mr., Mrs., Miss, or Ms. Surname: any college teacher without either a doctorate or professor ranking
- first name: some college teachers allow or prefer to be called by their first names
On the first day of class, I tell my students they may call me Professor Blazer, Dr. Blazer, or Alex, whichever they prefer. Since Teaching Fellows have neither a doctorate nor a title with Professor in it, their students should refer to them by the instructor's preference of Mr., Mrs., Miss, or Ms. Surname or first name. Similarly, what should an instructor call a student? Mr., Mrs., Miss, or Miss Surname, or first name. Do not refer to students as kids.
