Class Cancellation
and Coverage
- Illness, Birth, Death: If an instructor is unexpectedly ill or has a death or birth in the immediate family, she is permitted to cancel class. In the case of unexpected illness, the instructor should email the class and let Melinda Martin (melinda.martin@gcsu.edu, 478.445.4581) know so she can post a cancellation sign on the classroom door.
- Professional Development: If an instructor is delivering a reading, presenting a conference paper, or participating in professional development that takes her away from her class, she may cover her class with a substitute teacher or learning beyond the classroom experience.
- Classes Near Breaks: Cancelling classes around school breaks (fall break, Thanksgiving break, winter break, Martin Luther King Day, spring break, summer break) appears unprofessional and should be avoided except for professional obligations and emergencies.
- General Rule: An instructor may only cancel or cover her class in the case of an emergency or a professional obligation.
