Aim and SCOPE STATEMENT
of English 1101 and English 1102
Teaching Fellows Supplement
- English 1101: Teaching Fellows must use a reader of essays, a rhetoric of the writing process, and a writing handbook. All Teaching Fellows must use the writing handbook selected by the Textbook Adoption Committee.
- Teaching Fellows teaching 1101 for the first time must use the reader and the rhetoric selected by the Textbook Adoption Committee.
- Teaching Fellows teaching 1101 for the second or subsequent times may adopt a reader and a rhetoric (or combined reader/rhetoric) of their choosing yet subject to approval by the Coordinator of the Teaching Fellows.
- Here's how to examine potential textbooks and place a textbook order.
- English 1102: Teaching Fellows must use a literature anthology and a writing about literature rhetoric.
- The mandatory 1101 handbook is recommended for 1102, as most students will already have purchased it for 1101.
- Teaching Fellows teaching 1102 for the first time must use the reader and the rhetoric selected by the Textbook Adoption Committee. They may also adopt a novel, play, single author collection of poetry, or single author work of creative nonfiction of their choosing yet subject to approval by the Coordinator of the Teaching Fellows.
- Teaching Fellows teaching 1102 for the second or subsequent times may adopt a reader and a rhetoric (or combined reader/rhetoric) as well as a novel, play, single author collection of poetry, or single author work of creative nonfiction of their choosing yet subject to approval by the Coordinator of the Teaching Fellows.
- Textbook Adoption Committee: The Textbook Adoption Committee is composed of the Coordinator of the Teaching Fellows, a first-year Teaching Fellow, and a second-year Teaching Fellow.
- Each of the three members has an equal vote in adoption decisions, and two votes are needed to adopt a textbook.
- The two Teaching Fellow representatives will be selected by the Teaching Fellows.
Unanimously passed by the faculty Monday, 6 April 2009.
- Rationale: Graduate students with no to limited teaching experience should teach from a variety of textbooks for a few years while learning the conventions of composition pedagogies. Instructors should learn how textbooks work by teaching from a number of them before creating their own textbook or course packet. While some programs mandate that all graduate students teach the same syllabus, textbooks, and assignments, this program believes in starting graduate students off with common textbooks and similar assignment and then encouraging graduate instructors to research and select the textbooks that best fit their pedagogical preferences.
- The Aim & Scope document mandates that all instructors of 1101/2 order a handbook; ordering the same handbook for all constitutes an exercise in simplicity.
- Given that fall book orders are due in March before some Teaching Fellows are admitted, and given that first time teachers of 1101/2 courses are usually still developing their composition pedagogies (popular culture, classic essays, writing across the curriculum, rhetorical modes, etc.) and literature preferences (composition through literature, multicultural literature, American, British, etc.), first time instructors of 1101/2 will have their textbooks chosen for them by a committee whose majority is composed of their peers.
- Because experienced 1101/2 instructors have developed an understanding of what kinds of essays and writing instruction works for them in 1101/2, they should choose their own textbooks, subject to oversight approval by the Coordinator.]
- The Textbook Adoption Committee is composed of first- and second-year Teaching Fellows and the Coordinator. There should be an odd number of members for majority rules votes; the number of members should be low (3-5) for ease of finding meeting times and coming to agreement on textbook selection.
