Observations and Evaluations

Over the course of the academic year, each Teaching Fellow will

  1. be observed by the Coordinator (or other faculty member if the Coordinator has a schedule conflict)
  2. observe and be observed by a peer
  3. administer a Student Assessment of Learning Goals (SALG) and/or have a Group Instructional Feedback Technique (GIFT) consultation
  4. administer Student Opinion Surveys in every class

Coordinator Observation

The Coordinator will observe half of the Teaching Fellows in the fall and half in the spring. New Fellows and Fellows requesting letters of recommendation have observation priority fall semester. Provide a lesson plan before the observation and have a sampling of graded papers (an A, a B, a C, etc.) ready to discuss after the observation. MA Teaching Assistants will be observed by the MA Coordinator of Graduate Studies. The observation is designed to give you feedback on your class organization, course organization, lecture skills, discussion management, writing instruction, critical thinking instruction, and teaching persona.

Peer Observation

In fall semester, instructors will pair up, observe each other, and discuss their observations privately with one another. Inform the Coordinator after the observation and discussion has taken place. The goal of the peer observation is to obtain feedback from a fellow instructor regarding one's teaching style and method.

Group Interaction Feedback Technique (GIFT)

and/or Student Assessment of Learning Goals (SALG)

Rori Hoatlin, Jude Marr, and TJ Sandella have been trained to administer a CETL (The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning) midterm course assessment, Group Interaction Feedback Technique (GIFT) between weeks seven and nine of the semester.

The Student Assessment of Learning Goals survey is administered online between weeks seven and nine of the semester. Alex, Matt Jurak, and Roger Sollenberger created the standard survey in 2010 that all Teaching Fellows use. Note: for first time use, register as a new user with your university email. Once logged in, select "Implement an existing instrument created by your department without adding questions."

Teaching Fellows must complete either a GIFT or SALG during the semester that they are not observed by the Coordinator.

Assignment in Common

In the fall semester, Fellows will pair up, construct a major paper assignment due in both of their classes during September or October, and grade the assignment together (for instance, by 1) each instructor grading a paper then norming the two grades, 2) individually grading a batch of papers then discussing with your partner your grading rationale, or 3) grading each paper together). The goal of the assignment in common is to help new instructors help each other construct assignments and grading rubrics.

According to the Aim and Scope Supplement, Fellows teaching 1101 or 1102 for the first time, must use the reader and rhetoric selected by the Textbook Adoption Committee. Fellows teaching 1101 or 1102 for the second or third time may use the reader and rhetoric of their own choosing, subject to Coordinator approval. All Fellows may supplement their 1101 textbook with a single author book of essays or the Convocation Book. All Fellows may supplement their 1102 textbook with either a novel, a play, a book of poetry by a single author, a book of short stories by a single author, or a book of creative nonfiction, subject to Coordinator approval.
